One of the main issues of owning a PlayStation 3 and windows PC is that to connect DualShock 3 to PC becomes a hassle. Especially Windows 8.1 has presented notorious problems in which the controller is not even detected in some cases. We understand that some people aren’t exactly hardcore console or PC Fans. They like a bit of both. Hence, if they can connect their Dual shock controllers with PC they have the best of both worlds. So here we provide you step by step directions to connect Dualshock 3 to PC.
What we will be doing is we are going to simulate the Dualshock 3 controller as a Xbox controller on your PC which is supported by Windows 8.1. Since most of the windows games are compatible with the Xbox controller only hence you will see your controller being portrayed as a Xbox controller in the game (The button icons in the menu will be Xbox’s controller button icons).
Step 1: Download Motioninjoy Signed drivers and Better DS3
We have seen a lot of criticism on the working of the Motioninjoy DS3 tool, especially its requirement of an internet connection. So we will only be using this software to download the necessary drivers for detecting the device to connect the DualShock 3 to PC. The software can be found here. We would be using Better DS3 software which is a hassle free way of running your controller on the PC. Better DS3 can be downloaded from here.
Step 2: Download Necessary Drivers to Connect Dualshock 3 to PC
Install the Motioninjoy DS3 Tool. Now connect Dualshock 3 to PC. Windows will install some drivers, allow them to install and then open DS3 tool. Go to the Driver manager tab. You will see a table with information on the hardware location (port and hub) and hardware ID. Click on install all.

You will get a message saying that the installation was successful. Once the drivers are installed you may or may not keep the Motioninjoy driver software in your PC. Even if you uninstall it, the working of the controller will not be affected.
Note: The drivers will be installed for the port the controller is connected to. So the controller will work for that USB port only.
Step 3: Creating a profile for your controller
Now open the Better DS3 software after connecting your controller. You will see Dualshock 3(USB) Written under the connected DS3 controllers tab.
If you don’t see anything written there, that means that the controller is not detected by windows, in this case, install the drivers again. Go to the new button beside the selected profiles drop-down menu, and select Xinput. Xinput is the Xbox controller mask for your DS3 in this the controller will be shown as a Xbox controller to the game. Now click on the Autofill: Xbox 360 button. This will automatically assign the correct buttons to the DualShock 3 controller.
Before saving profile, it’s recommended to test the motor vibration. Give a name to the profile and save it. Now select the profile from the drop down menu and click apply.
Step 4: Test out the Controller
Now that all of this is done run a game of your choice to see if the controller actually works. FIFA would be the optimal testing game since it uses all of the controller buttons.
So that’s it, now you will be able to connect DualShock 3 to PC. One problem with using the DualShock 3 controller with the USB is that as you’re playing the battery will keep on charging. Due to this the life of battery is reduced.
Step 4(optional): Removing the battery connector
If you’re going out and taking your DualShock 3 Controller with you along with your laptop. The battery life of your controller may deteriorate due to continuous charging from the USB. Fortunately, Dualshock 3 controller works even without the battery. So all you have to do is open up your controller and disconnect the connector of the DualShock 3 battery. You may leave the battery inside the controller. You can connect the connector again to use the controller with Playstation 3 wirelessly.
Note: Be careful while opening up the controller since the triggers have a notorious habit of coming off the hinges and it becomes a bit tedious to keep attaching the trigger’s spring. Also do not touch any other part of the controller if you don’t know what you’re doing. Any damage done to the controller will not be our responsibility. However, if some problem does arise you can contact us and we will try to help you best we can.
