When it comes to buying a gaming laptop in India, consumers are often left with little choice. Laptops tagged as “gaming laptops” usually tend to be very taxing on the pocket with some not so to-of-the-line specs to show. The Asus R510J is certainly not a disappointment, but tagged as a gaming laptop it certainly leaves you asking for more. For a gaming laptop, the Nvidia 950M GPU seems a bit outdated. That out of the way, there are a lot of positives to this mean machine, as we realised during the review process.
Design and Build – Asus R510J
The Asus R510J is clearly expected to be a desktop replacement, it is not small, light or portable by any means, but then gaming laptops seldom are. The Asus R510J has a large 15.6 inch screen which allows tha laptop to have a full-sized keyboard (with the numerical keypad), a large trackpad and enough wrist support. The Asus R510J however scores some brownie points byproviding for a good number of connectivity ports, even a DVD-RW drive, which is a rare sight in laptop these days.
On the outside the Asus R510J a pseudo-Aztec design which comprises of red geometric lines fading in and out of the black background. The top side of the laptop has a smooth glossy finish which is easy to scratch (our review unit quite proves this fact) and is also a fingerprint magnet. You would be probably happier by covering it with a skin as soon as you get it out of the box. Surprisingly enough the plastic material and finish used inside is different. It is a nice textured, matte-finished material, which is alot less prone to scratches and fingerprints.
A positive point of the Asus R510J is that its screen is matte-finished, so you wont be bothers by reflections. The screen is sharp and the color reproduction and contrasts are great. The viewing angle on the screen of the Asus R510J is best suited for a single person.
Overall, the build of Asus R510J feels sturdy and the plastics have a premium feel to them. The laptop seems good enough to last through long hours of gaming or working.
Features and Specs – Asus R510J
The specs of the Asus R510J are pretty good as can be seen below:
- Dimensions: 25.1x38x3.2cm
- Weight: 2.4kg
- Screen: 15.6in, 1920x1080p
- CPU: Intel Core i7 4720HQ, 2.6 GHz
- RAM: 8GB DDR3L

- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 950M, 2GB RAM
- Ports: 1 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.0, VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, Headphones
- Optical drive: DVD-RW
- OS: Windows 10
The Intel Core i7 4720HQ (Broadwell) is known to be an overall performer and that makes it a good choice for the Asus R510J. The Intel chipset supported with 8GB of DDR3L RAM provides a good performance, as expected of it.
Asus has had a history with putting bloatware on their PCs and the Asus R510J is no different. Out of the box, the Asus R510J came with McAfee antivirus, Avast Secureline, Asus’ host of apps like Web Storage, WinFlash, USB Charger Plus, etc. Most of these take a toll on the laptop’s start-up time which is quite noticeable. These apps are however easy to uninstall and you would probably like to do that.
The webcam was a disappointment in the Asus R510J. The resolution being 640×480. We aren’t in 2000s anymore! The camera is certainly one of the things which went wrong with the Asus R510J and picture appears grey and unsaturated. If you opt for heavy video chatting, this is not the laptop for you, unless you have a separate webcam.
One of the biggest plus points in the Asus R510J is its host of connectivity options. It is thoughtful of Asus to have included a 1TB HDD as games these days can easily run into XX GB of space! SSDs would have been faster though and cause less errors.
