So does the new upgrade make this the best Android Smartphone under 10000 INR in India ?
Asus Zenfone Max 2016 Review
The most noticeable improvement in the new Asus Zenfone Max 2016 is the processor upgrade with its all new Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor. The phone feels fast as soon as you get a hold of it and is an improvement over last years model. Asus didn’t just leave the upgrades there, now the phone comes out of the box with the latest version of Android Marshmallow along with features like battery optimization, Google Now On TAP and more. All of this is backed with a massive 5000 mAh battery which will definitely last you more than a day.
Let me first start with the design which is exactly the same as the last year’s model and that is because this is more of a refresh to the previous model of Asus Zenfone Max which came out in January 2016 then an entirely new device . This new variant is similar in many ways and aims to offer the same fantastic battery life along with the new upgrades.
The Asus Zenfone Max is well built, with a typical Asus design that we have seen in almost all Zenfone’s. Its exactly similar to the last variant which is not a bad thing and you can get the Accessories of the previous variant to work with this one.
On the back side of the phone their is a removal back cover with a leather finish. Underneath it is the massive 5000 mAh battery which is non removal. Above the battery are your 2 Sim card slots and a micro SD card expansion slot. The power output of the included charger have been improved so slightly to 5.2W, its still far too weak for a phone with a 5000 mAh battery and it takes around 5 hrs to fully charge this phone.
The primary camera is a 13 MP one with f 2.0 Aperture and laser auto focus. With the primary camera their is a dual LED Real tone flash. The phone is made out of a strong plastic with a golden metalic paint along the sides with makes it feel like metal. The back leather texture and the side bezels does add a grip to the device and it feels comfortable to hold in the hand.
On the right side their is a power lock and unlock button along with the volume rocker right above it. On the top their is just a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack and on the bottom is a micro usb port with the primary microphone.
The Asus Zenfone Max is having a 5.5 inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 X 720 p. Its a IPS panel with good colour reproduction and a viewing angle of 178 degree. Their are various colour modes available in the setting which you can use to adjust the colour vividness. Like most Asus devices this also comes with their blue light filter which helps in adjusting the colour temperature in night for better usability.
Despite the Display being just 720p it feels sharp enough for day to day use and if I didn’t know if would have been hard for me to guess thats it’s a 720p Panel. The resolution of the display also plays a major role in reducing the battery consumption of the phone and increase the battery life as the processor has to drive less number of pixel and thus require less power. While other’s are offering a full HD display in this segment Asus could have upgraded the display in this variant.
The Phone is powered by a Snapdragon 615 Processor. Its a 64 Bit quad core processor that is backed with 2 GB of Ram and 32 GB of internal storage. The ASUS zenfone Max also supports LTE Category 4 for Super fast network speed going upto 150 Mbps. You can get the upgraded variant for little bit more price for increased performance but the 2 GB one also does fine for most tasks.
Underneath the back cover, the phone comes with 2 Sim card slots and a micro-SD card slot for expansion of storage. There is also a 5000 mAh Battery which powers the phone and can be used to power other devices using a provided OTG adaper. This is also a great feature of the phone that you can actually use reverse charging with it so to provide power to other devices.
Asus Zenfone Zoom 2016 is all about performance upgrades from last year’s model with its Octa Core Snapdragon processor and 3 GB of ram offering. It flys through day to day use in the most task and you won’t see any lag at all while using this phone. In some cases like heavy games there are some lags and loading times is higher considering another phone is the same price bracket, but this can run those games for a longer period of time with its massive battery.
On Antutu Benchmark, it scored 41459 which is less considering other in the same price bracket, but this phone is not about pure performance and not everyone looks for that. This is about the overall experience that you get with the smartphone, it good in anything you through at it and doesn’t lag at all. You can get more than a day worth of battery from the device with heavy usage throughout the day. It’s a good option for most of the people looking for a good reliable smartphone.
On the camera front its pretty much similar to last years phone, which had a good camera for its price. It comes with laser auto focus and dual tone flash. The camera picture that comes out of the phone is sometimes great in first shot, while other time lack saturation and you have to manually expose for perfect exposure.
There are many software enhancement features available in the camera app that improves the overall usability of the device while not adding any bloat to the overall experience. The front camera is also decent for selfies and video calls.
Asus Zenfone Max is powered by the latest version of Android along with Asus Zen UI on top of it. Its a hit or miss with the phones interface and if you have already used an Asus phone and liked it then you will feel at home with this one. It’s a faster version of the feature Rich Zen UI that we have seen on other Asus devices. You have many options to customise the phone including a theme store and multiple app drawer style options.
So overall Asus have hit a home run with the Zenfone Max. It’s the perfect phone if you just want a good overall smartphone with an excellent battery life with no worries of charging it daily. It will run all of the apps that you through at it with ease and won’t disappoint you. It’s perfect for those who were looking to gift an Android Smartphone to their Mom or Dad as its perfectly tailored around it. If your needs are pure performance and entertainment you should look somewhere else.
Something Asus could have improved in this version is a Full HD screen and fast charging as this takes around 5 hrs to fully charge. This might come in the way for some who need instant juice in their smartphone, but keeping that aside this is one of the Best Smartphone under 10000 in India right now.
